Fellowship Program

Gain Experience with Healthy Gulf!

Healthy Gulf is looking for individuals with a strong passion for the environment and social justice for our fellowship program. If you care about clean water, healthy communities, preservation of our wild spaces and responding to climate change, apply for Healthy Gulf's fellowship program! You’ll work to get these issues into the media, build coalitions, organize events and lobby decision-makers. Ultimately, we'll build the kind of public support it takes to create a healthier Gulf!

With members and supporters across the Gulf Coast, Healthy Gulf is committed to uniting and empowering people to protect and restore the natural resources of the Gulf Region. We strive to meet our mission through active education and promotion of the responsible use of the Earth's ecosystems and resources. Fill out this short application at this link.

Fellowships at a Glance

Our fellowships provide a paid, hands-on opportunity to gain in-depth understanding of environmental protection, water conservation, and clean energy. Fellows will conduct research, engage in citizen outreach, gather and analyze information, develop educational materials on a variety of issues, among other tasks. Healthy Gulf fellows will learn firsthand how our state and federal regulatory systems work and the role of non-governmental organizations in protecting our natural resources.

Fellows are selected on the basis of their interests, education and experience in relevant fields of work or study. We especially seek individuals who have an interest in environmental organizing and activism, as well as good communication and writing skills. Our fellowship rotations are fall, winter/spring and summer.

Healthy Gulf is looking for undergraduate and graduate students as well as recent graduates.

Who should apply?

The ideal candidate for a fellowship with Healthy Gulf is self-motivated, energetic, flexible and a strategic thinker with strong writing abilities, good organizational skills and a passion for the environment and social justice. Strong preference for people with a significant connection to the Gulf South. Every effort will be made to tailor tasks and responsibilities to personal skills and areas of interest.

Available Positions

Healthy Gulf offers fellowships in the following areas: Policy Engagement, Community Outreach, Environmental Policy, Development, and Fisheries. Not all positions are available for every semester.

Opportunities and Expectations

Fellows will learn many of the skills used in grassroots and advocacy organizing by working with professional staff. Fellows will also learn real skills through professional trainings and apply their new knowledge to their work.

Healthy Gulf offers about four fellowships per year. Each fellow is awarded $2500 per semester. Fellows will be expected to work 200 hours over the course of the semester, which includes holding regular office hours and attending mandatory meetings and activities (to be determined).

Once accepted, fellows are expected to complete the fellowship program. Students are encouraged to work with their college or university to obtain course credit when appropriate. Fellows will have at least one weekly meeting or call with their supervising staff member to discuss work plan and strategy.

Most fellows will work at the New Orleans-based office. However, we encourage fellows in Mississippi and Texas to apply. If housing is needed, the Healthy Gulf can assist in finding affordable housing through our university and non-profit networks.

In addition to our fellowships, Healthy Gulf offers unpaid internships in similar departments, which are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year.
