Restore Florida’s Nature Coast

Florida’s Nature Coast has some of the most beautiful and unique rivers, streams and springs in the world, but too many of these waterways are threatened by pumping and pollution. Take action today to urge state leaders to protect two of these amazing gems, the Chassahowitzka and Homosassa rivers. The Chassahowitzka and Homosassa are both designated as Outstanding Florida Waters, deemed worthy of exceptional protection because of their ecological, social, educational and recreational value. Unfortunately, the Southwest Florida Water Management District is ignoring this designation and has adopted standards that would allow for the continued degradation of water quantity and quality in these rivers. A group of concerned citizens has already urged the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) to step in, but so far FDEP has ignored their pleas.Click here to stand with these concerned Floridians by asking for responsible stewardship of Florida’s waterways.Allowing the Water Management District to degrade these Outstanding Florida Waters sets a dangerous precedent for other rivers and streams throughout the Nature Coast and Florida. Our most outstanding waters need higher water quality standards to preserve the unique ecological and recreational significance of these waterbodies. FDEP has yet to take action on this issue, but you can take action today. Please tell state leaders to give the Chassahowitzka and Homosassa Rivers the protections that, as Outstanding Florida Waters, they deserve.Cathy Harrelson is GRN’s Florida Organizer.
