Internet Organizing

The internet offers a unique opportunity to inform and activate citizens regarding important environmental issues in the Gulf of Mexico. At the Gulf Restoration Network, a relatively small organization with a far reach, this aspect of our campaign work has been growing tremendously. We are looking for individuals with computer and multimedia skills that would like to use them to help protect and restore the Gulf environment.

Internship Goals

  1. Organize e-activist participation in the GRN campaigns leading to victory
  2. Increase the visibility and profile of the GRN on the web
  3. Develop your organizing and multimedia skills

Organizer responsibilities could include:

  • Recruit e-activists through various on-line tools, including our campaign software, Democracy in Action
  • Help draft emails and newsletters that are sent to GRN e-activists
  • Create campaign e-actions that allow citizens to participate in campaigns through the internet
  • Craft on-line fundraising campaigns and increase GRN membership with web-based tools
  • Develop and maintain GRN social networking webpages (MySpace, Facebook, Care2, etc.)
  • Use social networking sites and other web tools to incrementally build the GRN email list
  • Work to publicize Gulf environmental issues in the “blogosphere”
  • Monitor news and developments to help add dynamic content to the GRN blog
  • Aid in the creation of multimedia tools, such as Flash animations, short videos, and other digital storytelling
  • Distribute and publicize GRN media pieces through sites like YouTube
  • Any other creative activities that will increase the GRN internet presence!

Skills Required:  Commitment to environmental issues and social change, strong communication skills, commitment to grassroots organizing, computer/internet skills. Some programming and/or design experience is preferred.

Supervision and Training: Initial training weekend in New Orleans, Sept 21-23. Bi-weekly individual planning calls and bi-weekly conference calls for trainings. Email and phone communication as frequently as needed. Site visits dependent on location.
