It is beyond dispute that the world is warming. Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases
produced when fossil fuels, such as coal, gas and oil (i.e. in cars and power
plants) are burned collect in the atmosphere, trapping the suns heat and
causing the earth to warm. Much of this
greenhouse gas remains in the atmosphere for decades and translates into rising
global temperatures. Although
temperatures fluctuate, predictions are that summer high temperatures will on
average rise between 3º and 7º F and winter low temperatures will warm by as
much as 5º F to the east and 10º F to the west. If nothing is done to
change the current level of greenhouse gas emissions earth will continue to warm.
What can be done to address climate change? We can dramatically reduce emissions
of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases by making cars run cleaner and
more efficiently (burning less gas), modernizing power plans, shifting to
energy sources that don't use fossil fuels (i.e. solar, wind, etc), and cutting
our energy use through energy efficiency (i.e. using more efficient appliances
and conserving energy).
