In
2006, Aveda distributors the Neill Corporation and The Salon People selected
the GRN as their Earth Month partner. Throughout
the month of April, Aveda salons across the south raised money to support the
GRN in protecting important coastal habitat necessary for the survival of many
endangered species. In addition to raising money, the salons collected petition
signatures to protect the Endangered Species Act, which were delivered to
members of Congress across the country.
We
are thankful to the Neill Corporation and The Salon People, and especially to
all of their participating salons, for their hard work and dedication. Together
they raised many thousands of dollars to
support our work. In addition, they were
invaluable in helping to raise awareness of the dangers that face threatened
and endangered species, such as the manatee, the Alabama beach mouse, and sperm whales, across
the Gulf.
The money raised from Aveda Earth Month activities will
support our work to:
- Protect Louisiana's threatened cypress swamps
which provide important habitat for a variety of endangered species,
including the ivory billed woodpecker (recently thought to be extinct.)
- Increase the protection of other
coastal habitats important to endangered species and vital to our
communities as natural storm barriers.
- Build a broader base of concerned and
active citizens across the Gulf to ensure that state and federal
agencies protect endangered species.
- Protect the Gulf's marine mammals
including sperm whales and the West Indian manatee from harmful mineral
exploration activities.
